The Scottish Access Code

The Land Reform Act (2003) gave walkers and cyclists unparalleled access to land across Scotland. This has opened up Scotland to be explored, but although this is a right, it is also a privilege and do not abuse this

Remember the act does not allow access to private gardens, golf courses and construction sites and you have as a cyclist or walker a responsibility to look after and respect the land you cross

You can read more about your rights and responsibilities at the Scottish Outdoor Access Code website

As a cyclist, in addition to your rights and responsibilities

  • Be respectful of the land you cross,
  • Keep to paths and tracks - this minimizes damage and erosion
  • Respect other land users
  1. Slow down for walkers
  2. approach slowly and be prepared to get off and stop - just because you can go faster doesn't mean you have the right to push people off the path.
  3. If approaching from behind alert walkers to your presence politely if they haven't seen you, don't scream up behind them and then lock the back wheels into a skid 2 inches from their heel
  4. Pass dogs and horses slowly and with care
  • Smile, say hello etc (you might need them if you fall off!)
