Mountain Biking near Abernyte

An easy area for mountain biking on wide forest roads, (with some wicked singletrack for those who want something a little more adventurous)

You can start either near Abernyte or Tullybaccart, the route described is from Abernyte.

route mapThe car park  (streetmap.co.uk external link - the arrow marks the car park) is 2-3 miles up the road from Abernyte in a quiet forest. From the car park climb as the wide track zigzags its way up the hill. After about half a mile there is a left turn - take this turn and follow this along to the end of this path where it descends onto another path. Take a left turn here and then a sharp right after a couple of hundred yards - this will bring you to the loch

Go around the left (north) side of the loch and through a gate at the end - a short community woodland path brings you to the main road at Tullybaccart. Take care crossing the busy A923 and carry on past the farm and follow the track until you come to another small loch

Make sure you take a left turn BEFORE the loch - once you do this the path will take you all the way up to Lundie crags - its quite a climb but the views are worth it.

descend the way you come down, but once you have crossed the road and past the Lairds Loch, take a left up the hill and if you keep going straight on you will come back to the car.

For the thrill seekers - there is some pretty extreme singletrack on the Abernyte side. If you follow the route from the cap park as mentioned above, and then followed the route taking the first left turn - you cannot miss some singletrack coming down from your right, and more significantly descending almost vertically to your left. Its not as bad after this section.

Unfortunately I haven't been able to find a good or easy way to the very start of the trails other than a) climbing up from where you first find them as above, or b) going round the back of the hill and climbing up carrying/pushing your bike from the other side
