Mountain Biking In Aberfoyle Area

page created 9/7/-07 - more coming soon

Aberfoyle area is teaming with places to take your bike - these are just some of the places to take your bike that I have found

Breaval Forest

Hidden just outside Aberfoyle, this little gem of a forest offers some very steep climbs, fantastic views and some "off the beaten track" single-track

Terrain - about 50 % fire track, the rest is paths through the forest with several variations. The car park here marks the start of a trail which will take you 7.5 miles all the way to Callander, or you can combine the Mentieth and Lime Craig Loop to form a 5 mile circuit.

To follow  the latter - take the wide fire track out of the car park going upwards following the yellow markers. Shortly before you come to a gate across the path the yellow markers take you off to the left. After taking this left turn push ever harder up the hill until you can push no more and have to walk. Push your bike for a short distance till you meet some steps. These wide  steps give way to a 10 metre section of very tricky narrow rocky steps which are very slippery in the wet.

Shortly after you reach the top of the steps you can get back on your bike. The path meets a wider fire track - turn left and cruise down the hill. This takes you to the junction of red and yellow routes. take a right and you are now on the red route. carry on up following the way markers from here (unfortunately I broke a chain here and wasn't able to repair it so I cant tell you about the rest of the route) (6/6/07)

Loch Katrine Circuit

Distance                33 miles

Terrain –                mixture of private road and public road – all tarmac

Difficulty               technical – easy

Fitness –                 hard

This is a circular route so you can start anywhere along the route. We started at the Loch Katrine car park. From here you head along the private road the goes along the  North - east side of the loch. For the first 5 miles or so the going is quite hilly as you road undulates. After this it flattens out a little

The private road at the end of the loch meets a public road. From here you turn left and head into Aberfoyle, the majority of which is a fairly gentle downhill

Once you hit Aberfoyle you turn left and take the A821 up the hill. With over 25 miles already done this is a hard push up and over the dukes pass. It can be a busy road but the twists, turns and gradients keeps the speeds of the cars fairly slow

On the other wise of the pass it is mostly (but not all) downhill until you reach the wee road that takes you back up to Loch Katrine

Alternative starting points would be Aberfoyle, meaning you get the duke’s pass out of the way early, or Ben Venue car park
